CD Review: New Music From Indie-Artists Rugby Road, Stellarscope And Joseph Pagano

Philadelphia-based rockers Rugby Road have been lighting up the underground scene for more than 30 years. As one of the top indie-rock bands of the east coast, they've opened for legendary acts like the Allman Brothers Band, Peter Frampton and Phish and have recently released their new EP titled "Rugby Road III." The new 4-song album begins with the "jamband" style of "Give It Away" as if they pulled out a page from the Phish's songbook. They deliver a raw, straight-up Rolling Stones-style rock song with "Back To You." There is no need for filler with the great songwriting supplied in their music. Also from the Philadelphia area comes the latest release from new wave/post punk band Stellarscope. They push the limits on their new full-length album "Standing In The Shadow Of Your Ghost," which has been compared to a Quentin Tarantino film. The new 10-song release is built upon layers in the studio as you are hit right away with the wall of sound from the opener "Don't Belong." They continue with the moody, alternative feel of "Capsized" and the atmospheric soundscape of "Falling" as you can hear the Pink Floyd influence in their music. They pick the energy up with the punk-like fury of "Only Strangers," before delivering the dark tones of "All For You." The new album wraps up with the buzzing guitars of "You Feel It Too" and steady flow of "This Is How It Ends." Finally, from New York comes the latest from singer/songwriter Joseph Pagano. His new single "More Friends In Heaven (Than In Hell)" is his first new music in 2 years. It combines the songwriting elements of folk with the high energy of punk to create this undeniably addictive single.
