CD Review: Mike Pinera Revisits His Past With New "Timeless" Blues Image Compilation

In 1970, rockers Blues Image cracked the top 5 on the singles chart with their hit "Ride Captain Ride," then disappeared into obscurity. Guitarist/songwriter Mike Pinera was the heart of the band, until he left the group during the recording of their album "Open." He joined Iron Butterfly in 1969 for a short period of time, before going solo, but he always gave credit to the band Blues Image for beginning his amazing trip.

On March 31st, Purple Pyramid Records released a new 12-song compilation titled "Timeless" that gathers together many of the classic songs of Blue Image and Iron Butterfly along with some of Pinera's solo material. The new release begins with modernized versions of the classic singles "Ride Captain Ride" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." Both songs showcase Pinera's amazing guitar work as they receive the extended treatment, pushing the songs to their limits. A couple of guests that appear on this new release are hall of fame inductee Jonathan Cain (Journey) and guitarist Pat Travers. The up-tempo rock of "Love Is The Answer," combines the electrifying guitar work of Pinera with the keyboard wizardry of Cain on this quick-moving song. Travers and Pinera trade guitar licks on the classic seventies rock sound of "Pay My Dues," before slowing down for the gentle, pop-sway of "In The Garden Of Eden." The album finishes with the epics sound of "Isla" and the soulful swing of "Something To Say," highlighted by Cain's keyboards.
