CD Review: Musicians Pay Tribute To Tony Bennett For His 90th Birthday

The ageless wonder, Tony Bennett turned 90 years old in August. To celebrate, NBC featured a prime-time special event that featured Bennett along with other musical greats like Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel to pay homage to voice that has entertained over three generations of music fans. As a companion piece to the television special, Columbia Records released "Tony Bennett Celebrates 90" on December 16th.

The show was filmed on September 15th at Radio City Music Hall and begins with Bennett's most recent musical partner Lady Gaga performing a swinging version of "The Lady Is A Tramp." Gaga has no problem taking control of the song and kicking off the evening with a bang. Michael Buble follows with "The Good Life," before Andrea Bocelli lifts the spirits in the audience with an amazing rendition of "Ave Maria." Tony Bennett joins his fellow New Yorker, Billy Joel, for a stunning duet of Joel's "New York State Of Mind." Stevie Wonder pays homage to Bennett with his ballad "Visions" and Elton John keeps the emotions flowing with "Can You Feel The Love Tonight." Then Mr. Bennet takes the floor, beginning with "Who Cares?" and "The Best Is Yet To Come." His voice is still smooth and powerful, especially during his iconic song "I Left My Heart In San Francisco."

The event closes with Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga leading the group of performers in a jazzed-up, sing-along version of "Happy Birthday." A 3CD deluxe edition was also released exclusively through Amazon that includes the same songs in the standard set along with 2 bonus discs worth of previously unreleased live and studio outtakes from throughout Tony Bennett's career.
