CD/DVD Review: "Pornografitti" Turns 25 With New Live Release From Extreme

In 2015, funk/metal band Extreme celebrated the 25th anniversary of their most successful album "Pornograffitti" with a world tour that began on January 16th at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT (review: jpsmusicblog.blogspot.com). They played the entire album, from start to finish, as it appeared upon its first release in 1990. The singles "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted" were both top 5 singles from the album and earned them a Grammy nomination for best "Pop Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocal."

Now on October 14th, Rock Fuel Media is releasing their next volume of "Metal Meltdown Live!," which features Extreme's "Pornografitti Live 25" show on DVD/CD. It was recorded on May 30, 2015 at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The video begins with the band talking about performing the "Pornografitti" album from start to finish in a live setting and also shows some clips of the band at rehearsals before the show. The audience knows all the songs by heart, singing along to "Decadence Dance" and of course "More Than Words," which becomes one big sing-along. You can see how how proud guitarist/songwriter Nuno Bettoncourt is of the songs as he is so focused on delivering the best version he can of the these compositions.

The lesser known songs on the album like "When I'm President" and "Money (In God We Trust)" get their time to shine in the live setting. During the show, the live video breaks away to include interviews with fans of the band like Brian May (Queen) talking about the amazing solo in "Get The Funk Out" and Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) giving praise to that other band from Boston. Extreme showcase their talents by mixing together the jazzy ballad "When I First Kissed You" with the funk metal of "Suzi (Wants Her All Day What)," topped with the guitar instrumental "Flight Of The Wounded Bumblebee."

They end the show with one of Extreme's earliest singles "Play With Me" and one of their last charting singles "Cupid's Dead" just to give the audience a taste of their songs outside of "Pornografitti." The DVD also includes a 100-minute documentary on the band titled "Rock Show." It begins with Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt back at Gary's childhood home and visiting the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. Bassist Pat Badger discusses how he joined the band and how Extreme went through three different drummers before settling on current skins man Kevin Figueiredo. The documentary also shows how difficult the band's break-up was on everyone in Extreme and how welcoming their fans were when the band reunited in 2007. Extreme revisit the studio where "Pornografitti" was recorded as Nuno, Gary and Pat sit down and listen to the original masters of the album. The documentary also features interviews with Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show) and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) and makes a great companion piece to the concert.
