Jerry Garcia was the iconic motor that drove the Grateful Dead. His passing in 1995, put an end to an era in rock music, but his legacy continues to live on twenty years after his death. To prove this, Rounder Records is releasing the concert film and soundtrack from "Dear Jerry: Celebrating The Music Of Jerry Garcia."
The concert took place on May 14, 2015 and featured over 20 performances by many artists who was influenced by Garcia's music. The celebration also included his Grateful Dead bandmates, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart; all performing with their own bands. The two and a half hour show was filmed in HD and will be released on October 14th on Blu-ray, DVD, CD and digital download.
The 2CD soundtrack begins with Phil Lesh & Communion performing "The Wheel/Uncle John's Band," which runs past the 17-minute mark. The late Allen Toussaint adds some New Orleans flair to the gospel-like rendition of "Get Out My Life Woman" and Peter Frampton electrifies "(I'm A) Road Runner" with his guitar work. Reggae artist Jimmy Cliff teams up with Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann on his own song "The Harder They Come," which Jerry Garcia covered quite often in concert. Bob Weir joins Cliff on "Fire On The Mountain" as Jimmy Cliff gives the song a true island vibe. The first disc closes with The Disco Biscuits performing their spot on rendition of "Scarlet Begonias," which leads into "I Know You Rider" as the music pushes past the 12-minute mark.
The second disc is highlighted by the next wave of jam bands as moe, O.A.R. and Widespread Panic, adding their own special touch to their performances of "Loser," "St. Stephen" and "Morning Dew" respectively. Fellow Grateful Dead touring partners Los Lobos are joined by Bob Weir for the exciting, up-tempo rendition of "Bertha." The show wraps up with Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann coming together to sing "Touch Of Grey," before the whole ensemble joins them on an emotional version of "Ripple."
