CD Review: Audio Fidelity Releases A New Refreshing Look At Billy Joel's "Streetlife Serenade"

One of the latest releases from the acclaimed Audio Fidelity label is Billy Joel's "Streetlife Serenade." It was Billy Joel's third solo album (second with Columbia Records) and features the hit single "The Entertainer." It was not as big a commercial success as its predecessor, "Piano Man," but the album showcases more passion and musicianship from Joel.

The album begins with the wonderful piano introduction of "Streetlife Serenader" as Billy Joel sings from the heart as he has lived this life first hand. The music becomes more fleshed out on this new Hybrid Multichannel SACD which was mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio. The piano alone benefits from this as you'd feel as if you were in the lounge, standing next to Joel's piano as he is performing only for you. The clarity of the instrumental "Root Beer Rag" sounds less tinny, while the drums of "Last Of The Big Time Spenders" is felt with the volume cranked up high. Most of the songs on this album are ballads as you can appreciate the difference between the delicacy and power in Joel's vocals.
