CD Review: Country Artist Anne McCue Got Us "Blue Sky Thinkin'" With Her New Album

From Nashville, TN comes the Australian-born country/blues artist Anne McCue with her first new album in four years entitled "Blue Sky Thinkin'." After releasing a few cover song singles, McCue entered the studio with a load of original material that took her music in different direction. The musical theme of her latest release has an early-jazz/pre-rock feel, beginning with the up-tempo swing of "Dig Two Graves." The bluesy feel of "Things You Left Out In The Rain" displays a different style to McCue's music as she channels Billie Holiday and Etta James on these early era sounding pop tunes. McCue imports some of Cab Calloway's vocal styling on "Devil In The Middle" (which includes Dave Alvin on vocals), while she picks up the tempo on the rockabilly feel of "Little White Cat." Her song writing excels on the lounge-type jazz of "Uncanny Moon," before closing with the title song that pays tribute to the great jazz guitarist Charlie Christian as McCue brings some of her country aspects into the song.
