CD Review: Mogwai Looks To Expand Their Sound On "Rave Tapes"

From Scotland comes the latest release from post-rock band Mogwai. The new album, "Rave Tapes" will be released on January 21 through Seattle's Sub-Pop label.  This will be the band's eighth studio album and continues Mogwai's transition to the U.S. charts.

The ten-song release starts out with the ambient keyboard instrumental "Heard About You Last Night," before stretching out on the smooth progressive rock of "Simon Ferocious." The album's first single, "Remurdered" showcases a darker, early Pink Floydian side to their experimentation and continues with the eerie voice overs on "Replenish." The most accessible song on the album is the gentle airy piano-led "Blues Hour," which is one of the few songs featuring vocals. They close with the electronic, computer voiced soundscapes of "The Lord Is Out Of Control."

Mogwai are beginning their tour with a string of dates in Europe and Japan before making their way to the U.S. in April. To find out more, please visit mogwai.co.uk.
