CD Review: The Flaming Lips Invite A Few "Fwends"
In June of this year, The Flaming Lips released their latest full-length album entitled “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.” It features 13 songs with the band collaborating with special guests like Yoko Ono, Bon Iver, Kesha and more. Each song takes on a life of its own as the guest performer adds their talents to the music of The Flaming Lips.
The album begins with the club beats of “2012 (You Must Be Upgraded),” which features Kesha on lead vocals. With The Flaming Lips, you never know what to expect as they simplify their sound for the Bon Iver fronted “Ashes In The Air.” One of the better collaborations is “Helping The Retarded To Know God,” which includes Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Both bands expanded their pallets in order to create a great musical piece. My Morning Jacket’s Jim James is almost unrecognizable in the song “That Ain’t My Trip,” while The Flaming Lips surrounded Nick Cave with a wall of music in “You Man? Human??” The song “Do It,” which features Yoko Ono sounds like what John Lennon may have attempted with Ono if he was still with us today. The album closes with the spaced out sound of “Girl, You’re So Weird” and the storytelling of “Tasered and Maced” which features Aaron Behrens of Ghostland Observatory.
After completing 8 shows in 24 hours, The Flaming Lips are heading to Europe for a set of shows. They will be returning to the U.S. at the end of August performing at some festivals during that time. For a complete list of dates and up to date news on the band, please visit flaminglips.com.
