CD Review: Eastern Phoebes Serves Up "Eggplant"

From Long Island comes the indie-pop duo known as Eastern Phoebes with a new album entitled “Eggplant.” This is the band’s fourth “homemade” EP and it was produced by singer/songwriter Ry Smith.

The thing you notice immediately is how light and free the music sounds, especially when you get to record near your surroundings and at your own convenience. The harmonizing between Smith and vocalist Meg Bayley sounds heavenly in “Kingfisher” and “The Strait of Magellan.” The songs “Big Thunder” and “Stay Together Learn The Flowers Go Light” are perfect examples of folk music at its best.
