Cassette Review: Jesse Carsten's Rough Demo "To Be Done"

Singer/songwriter Jesse Carsten has recently released a new cassette entitled "What's To Be Done While We Stay" through Intellectual Bird Records out of New York. Jesse experiments with a load of different sounds to see which flows best with his lyrics. "Franny" is a bit of a distorted mess, but the simplicity of "Something Inside Of Me" draws up similarities to early Dead Milkmen or Violent Femmes demos. One of the problems with this recording is the sound quality lacks the input of a professional. Carsten seems to have fun with his lyrics as in "Find Joy In Running", but relies too much on the distortion. The 4-minute album closer "White Sky Companion" is the most complete song in this offering.

Jesse Carsten and his band currently have one date lined-up on April 13 at the Silent Bar in Brushwick, New York. For tour date information and videos, please visit
